Gizela's Story

This is Gizela Abinun on April 15th, 2021 in Rishon Le Zion, Israel. At that time she is at the age of 94 years.

It was not before the year 2019 that she wrote – together with her son – the book in which she describes her path of survival from former Yugoslavia through a German concentration camp to Israel, beginning with her youth.

My relation to this book already originates from 1995, more than 20 years before it was written: I met Shmuel Abinun. We became friends and we visited each other several times, at which my wife and I could meet his family in Israel and also his mother Gizela. In 2005 I was in Schipkau and Tröbitz together with Shmuel and his mother, and when in 2008 he and his wife visited the Bergen-Belsen memorial and the Holocaust memorial in Berlin we escorted them. When I obtained one of the first – original – copies of "Gizela's Story" I was unable to read it. After Shmuel decided to translate it from Hebrew to English I could read the description, understand it and translate it to German. Only then I realized that our encounters had helped Gizela to open up and tell her story.
